Yassmin Abdel-Magied Went On ‘Hard Chat’ And It Was Absolutely Brutal
"Do you think that every Anzac Day we should have a minute's silence for you career?"
The final ‘Hard Chat’ of the year has delivered in spades, with host Tom Gleeson going head to head with engineer and author Yassmin Abdel-Magied during the The Weekly‘s end of year wrap.
Abdel-Magied — in case you’ve forgotten the tens of thousands of words written about her in various News Corp papers — was at the centre of controversy earlier this year after posting a seven word Facebook status on Anzac Day. The media-fuelled hysteria that followed saw her bombarded with abusive messages and death threats, and only died down after she moved to the other side of the world. Great country we’ve got here, hey.
In spite of everything, Abdel-Magied was more than game for Gleeson’s shtick. Which is lucky, because he did not hold back.
“Do you think that every Anzac Day we should have a minute’s silence for your career?” asked Gleeson. “Maybe you should start a hashtag, #LestWeForgetToWriteStupidShitOnFacebook.”
“You could go march at Anzac Day,” he added. “Really get things going.”
Gleeson also asked his guest about comments she recently made on The Project equating Australia to an abusive partner. “What are you doing here? You should leave!” he insisted.
“I mean, I’ve been told to leave a number of times, but we know how hard it is,” Abdel-Magied admitted. “Sometimes you’re like ‘maybe they didn’t mean it’, and you come back, and then you’re like ‘oh, yeah, they’re actually dicks’.
“Alright, that should help this go viral,” said Gleeson.
He also pointed out that she could follow in the footsteps of former ‘Hard Chat’ guest Sophie Monk by landing her own reality show, Yassmin’s Getting Married.
“I mean, I’d be really curious who the candidates would be, because I do like racists,” said Abdel-Magied. “It’s a bit of a weird fetish.”
“You could get the Reclaim Australia mob on, choose one of them,” suggested Gleeson.
“Southern Cross neck tattoos really do it for me,” she replied.
