The first trailer for the upcoming X-Men film Dark Phoenix just dropped, and so far it actually looks pretty good.

That wasn’t necessarily a given, seeing as this is the second attempt to translate the Dark Phoenix story to film. The first one was in the widely-panned third instalment of the first trilogy of X-Men films (X-Men: The Last Stand), and, well, we’ll let that speak for itself.

The new film, though, looks promising. It’s set in the 1990s, and it centres on one of the most intense threats the X-Men have ever had to face: one of their own turning against them. During a mission in space, Jean Grey (played by Sophie Turner) is hit by a mysterious cosmic force that gradually begins to increase her power — but makes her unstable too.

The trailer only hints at the kind of chaos that will ensue, but it shows a desperate team trying to come to terms with the terrifying extent of that power when it’s out of control. More importantly, it looks like Dark Phoenix might just avoid the errors of The Last Stand by actually focusing on the woman it’s about: there’s plenty of Jean Grey in this trailer, and Sophie Turner delivers.

And for the more cynical, well, the trailer also contains a line that sums up basically every X-Men storyline ever: “You’re always sorry, Charles, and there’s always a speech, and nobody cares.” So true.
