Tkay Maidza’s Cover Of Pixies’ ‘Where Is My Mind?’ Is A Sludgy Synth Dream
Consider your Friday made.
Covering the Pixies’ beloved track ‘Where Is My Mind?’ isn’t for the faint-hearted — put one foot wrong and you’ll be sent into indie rock purgatory, floating about beside Biffy Clyro for their cover of ‘WAP’.
Thankfully Tkay Maidza’s gritty and synth-driven cover of the Surfer Rosa track won’t see the emcee sent into limbo. Ardent fans of the original might have to check their bias at the door, as Maidza’s is a thoroughly modern update, but she retains the crucial melancholy of the original. Watch it below.
The cover was released as part of a new compilation celebrating record label 4AD’s 40th anniversary; titled Bills & Aches & Blues, it’ll feature acts such as Big Thief, Tune-Yards, Future Islands, Dry Cleaning, Jenny Hval, and more. The first five tracks are already out — apart from Maidza’s ‘Where Is My Mind?’, there’s also The Breeders covering His Name Is Alive and Aldous Harding covering Deerhunter.
Bills & Aches & Blues will land digitally on April 2, the vinyl release will drop on July 23.
Tkay, meanwhile, has just recovered from breaking the internet a few weeks ago with the release of ‘Kim’ — the video of which features her cosplaying as Lil Kim, Kim Kardashian, and Kim Possible. And yes, she remakes that PAPER magazine cover.
