The Eight Best Underground Horror Movies To Scare The Crap Out Of You This Halloween
Sleep tight.
Maniac (1980)
New York City, deteriorated from a decade of grime and crime, is put front and centre of this unsettling low-budget exploitation film about a mentally unhinged murderer who kills and then scalps his victims, adorning the mannequins that fill his apartment with his gruesome keepsakes.
With a keen eye for location – not many films have used the Verrazano Bridge from Brooklyn to Staten Island quite so effectively, and anyone who has trawled a Manhattan subway after midnight will get the shivers from one particularly terrifying sequence – you should watch the original and not the awful remake with Elijah Wood from 2012.
Directed by William Lustig
Starring Joe Spinell, Caroline Monro, Kelly Piper and Abigail Clayton
