She says Drake's verse takes a bit of poetic licence - and it maybe wasn't fully thought out.

SZA has clarified that she didn’t date Drake while she was underage, after the rapper’s verse on a new track by 21 Savage and Metro Boomin called ‘Mr. Right Now’ insinuates as much.

On his verse, Drake raps the lines: “Yeah, said she wanna fuck to some SZA, wait / ‘Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08”. The line stuck out to listeners, not just for the new information that the two musical powerhouses dated, but the timeline: SZA would have been 17 until November 8 in 2008, and Drake 22/23.

In two tweets, SZA — aka Solána Rowe — addressed the lyric to say that they did date, but in 2009, when she was 18 years old.

“So It was actually 2009 lol,” she wrote. “In this case a year of poetic rap license mattered lol I think he jus innocently rhymed 08 w wait . Anybody who really knows me and was around during this time can confirm.. it’s all love all peace”

“I just didn’t want anybody thinking anything underage or creepy was happening . Completely innocent . Lifetimes ago .”

Recently, SZA released ‘Hit Different feat. Ty Dolla Sign)’, potentially the first taste of a sophomore follow-up to 2017’s Ctrl.

We haven’t exactly been bereft of new SZA tracks, though. In the past two years, she’s recorded original tracks on a series of film and TV soundtracks including Game of Thrones, Trolls World Tour and Black Panther, and has featured on tracks by DJ Khaled, Cardi B and Post Malone.

Most recently, SZA announced she will feature on Drew Barrymore’s new chaotic good talk show to perform her Ctrl cut ‘Drew Barrymore’, which the star featured in the music video for.
