The Breakout Star Of The New ‘Pokemon Sword & Shield’ Trailer Is Chonky Pikachu
Pokemon is weird.
I mean, we all know this. The biggest entertainment franchise in recorded history is about bizarre little humanoid creatures who get stored in balls and fired out to compete in glorified bouts of dog fighting.
We are all aware that every Pokemon game on the planet is absolutely batshit. We simply exert a lot of energy pretending that they aren’t. Because if we didn’t, we’d all spend the rest of our lives gibbering in a corner, trying to decide whether people drink the milk of Wooloos, or why Professor Oak can’t remember his own grandson’s name.
Anyway, keeping in that proud tradition, Pokemon Sword and Shield are both going to be nuttier than an explosion at a macadamia farm.
The first trailer made that very clear, filled to the brim as it was with wide-eyed sheep Pokemon and a strange, uncanny valley version of England.
But a new trailer has precisely delineated the depths of this madness, showing off a feature of the game called Gigantamax, which is the craziest thing I’ve ever clapped my eyes on.
Gigantamax is a feature that allows Pokemon to grow extremely big. I’d tell you something more, but I don’t really have anything further to say. You press a button, and your furry friend gets extremely big. That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

Well, as you’d expect, these extremely chonky Pokemon — chonkemon, if you will — have been lapped up by the internet, with Fat Pikachu in particular becoming a source of much merriment.
I mean, just take a look at this humungous boy:

But Pikachu isn’t the trailer’s only viral breakout star. After all, he has stiff competition in the form of Longcat Meowth.

In fact, Longcat Meowth is earning an extra burst of fan attention, on account of the fact that he looks a great deal like the longcat meme of old. Just drink up the sight of this lengthy feline.

Gigantomax Meowth is really silly but also a reference to Longcat, an ancient meme Japan created and loved, so it's very welcome in my books pic.twitter.com/FRRXJk3Pjr
