Kevin Spacey has pleaded not guilty to a charge of indecent assault and battery after fronting a Massachusetts court over an allegation of groping.

The Oscar-winning actor has been charged with assaulting an 18-year-old man in a restaurant in Nantucket in 2016. It is the first criminal case to be brought against Spacey since his career was effectively ended in October 2017 when actor Anthony Rapp accused him of making sexual advances towards him in 1986 when Rapp was just 14 years old.

Since Rapp made his allegations public, more than a dozen other people have come forward to accuse Spacey of sexual misconduct. Spacey says he has no memory of the alleged encounter with Rapp, and has publicly denied all other allegations.

Following a 10-minute hearing, Spacey was released without having to pay bail. His next court date is set for early March. Should he be convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.

The actor was widely ridiculed last month after posting a bizarre video on social media in which he seemingly addressed the allegations against him while in character as his scheming House of Cards protagonist Frank Underwood. Spacey was fired from the Netflix show after eight people who worked on the series accused him of abusive behaviour including sexual assault.
