This scene is almost universally regarded as one of the most iconic depictions of sex ever to grace the silver screen, but I have to tear it down.
Sure, there’s a lot to admire: primal positioning, realistic skin-slapping, and a believable disconnection between the two that suggests they’re not quite on the same page but are still in the throes of individual passion. But there’s something so Oscar-conscious about Berry’s performance, and her instigation of the root (it really does deserve that title) — where she repeatedly pleads to Billy Bob that he make her “feel good” in about eight different voices — is so haphazard that you’d think she was voicing various bit-parts in a controversial Pixar film.
