Actor Ellen Page has slammed homophobic politicians who “spend [their] career trying to cause suffering” in an emotional appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The host of VICE’s Gaycation told Colbert it was impossible not to be “fired up” over President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence’s position on LGBTIQ issues.

“Mike Pence wishes I couldn’t be married,” Page said. “The Vice President of America wishes I didn’t have the love with my wife”.

Page accused Pence of hurting the queer community “so badly” during his time as Governor of Indiana. While in office, Pence signed a controversial religious freedom act that critics say allows businesses to discriminate against LGBTIQ people on the basis of religion.

But Page’s words weren’t just aimed at Pence and Trump, but at all politicians who use their power to promote discrimination.

“Connect the dots,” she said. “If you’re in a position of power and you hate people, and you want to cause suffering to them, and you spend your career trying to cause suffering, what do you think is going to happen?”

“Kids are going to be abused, and they’re going to kill themselves, and people are going to be beaten on the street.”

“This needs to fucking stop.”
