Staying Alive (1983)

Sylvester Stallone directed and co-wrote this eight-years-later sequel to the era-defining Saturday Night Fever (1975), transporting John Travolta’s cocky guido stud from the discotheques of Brooklyn to the stages of Broadway. The propulsive darkness of the original, set amongst the bright lights of a decaying New York City, gave way to gaudy slickness and a happy ending that was not at all appropriate. Watching Travolta’s greased-up body writhing about amongst the leotards and loincloths is truly repulsive.
