Australia Is Getting Its Very Own Drive-In Music Festival, And The Line-Up Is Stacked
Featuring The Chats, Sahara Beck, and so many more.
Very soon after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, it became clear that the festival industry would be one of the hardest hit sectors of the contemporary music scene.
Small-scale touring is tricky enough now that most venues have caps, and punters are more unlikely than ever to leave their homes en masse. But festivals are a whole different ballgame. In order to make any proper bank, festivals have to pull international artists — and we won’t be seeing any of them for a long, long time. That means that festival by their very nature now have to be smaller, more humble affairs, stacked with local talent and capped with maximum crowd numbers.
But hey, that’s not entirely a bad thing. We as a country need to get better at appreciating our own musicians, rather than just aping the trajectories of Americans.
Which is why we should celebrate the news that Australia is getting its very own drive-in music festival.
Titled Airwaves, the festival is a cars-only event. Attendees will pull in, tune their radio to the right station, and then sit back and have a ball. Particularly given how stacked the line-up is. The festival will be headlined by homegrown heroes The Chats, along with The Dreggs, The Pierce Brothers, Bugs and Sahara Beck.
Better yet, the fest will go down over three consecutive days. Oh, and there’ll be a theme too — outer space — which will bring an added flavour to the event.
Airwaves will hit Nambour Showgrounds in the Sunshine Coast on Friday 10, Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 July. Tickets are onsale now — head to Oztix to snap them up. And snap them up fast — they are sure to go before you realise it.
