Merry Christmas! Barack Obama And Lin-Manuel Miranda Just Dropped A ‘Hamilton’ Remix
*mic drop*
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s had a pretty big year — and while we thought he might let things lie with the impending release of Mary Poppins Returns, he’s just one-upped himself by dropping a song with Barack Obama. As you do.
The Hamilton: An American Musical writer has been remixing songs from the smash musical all year — appropriately, his thirteenth and final ‘Hamildrop’ is ‘One Last Time’. As a reminder, it’s the song where George Washington announces he’s not re-running for president, featuring text from his farewell speech in 1796.
In this ’44 remix’, Obama recites that speech, with Manuel singing the lines underneath. It’s a poignant choice, since the Hamilton cast performed the song to a standing ovation in the White House at the end of the 44th President’s second term in 2017, before Donald Trump took the reigns.
Add to that the fact that Miranda was motivated to finish writing Hamilton after performing a song for Obama back in 2009, and that ‘One Last Time’ was partially inspired by Will.I.Am’s 2008 song for the Obama presidential campaign and we’ve got a bit of a full circle moment here.
We assume Obama recorded the song in-between production meetings of his and former first lady Michelle Obama’s multiple upcoming Netflix shows and surprising a children’s hospital with a Santa’s sack full of gifts.
Previous Hamildrops have included collabs with Nas, Sara Bareilles, The Decemberists, Mobb Deep and more, with each release raising funds for various not-for-profits.
‘One Last Time’ might not be particularly Christmas-y, but we’re going to blast it and the other Hamildrops today all the same. Listen below.
