Talk about perfect casting.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman has already had a pretty perfect strike rate when it comes to casting.

Minor internet backlash be damned: Robert Pattinson is a perfect Batman, totally able to pull off the brooding mystery required of the character without ever falling into self-parody. Then there’s the wonderful rumours that Jonah Hill is going to play either The Penguin or The Riddler, a brace of villains that he could nail with utter aplomb (hell, I say dive straight into the madness of it all and let him play both.)

Basically, even if you’re extremely tired of the glut of superhero movies that appear to have totally overtaken our box office, it’s pretty hard not to be excited about the cast members that Reeves is assembling.

Well, the director has just topped himself: he has cast Zoe Kravitz of Big Little Lies fame in the role of Catwoman.

To be honest, it’s hard to imagine more perfect casting. Kravitz has spent the last five years carving out a niche for herself as one of the most versatile, sly actors in Hollywood. Who else can be so subtly subversive while also proving so completely committed to the role?

Better yet, although she shares some qualities in common with Michelle Pfeiffer, the actress who most successfully pulled off the legendary character, Kravitz is her own creature, able to push the heroine into new and unusual directions.

Of course, it’s probably best to somewhat temper your excitement about all this — The Batman hasn’t even started filming yet, which means that we have a long, long time before the film drops. But hey, everything’s already pointing to the flick being one of the most fascinating and exciting takes on the Caped Crusader since Tim Burton filmed The Penguin biting off a grown man’s nose.
