As a number of countries start to enforce stricter lockdown policies, people are stuck in their homes and forced to think of ways to pass the time.

Thankfully, much to the delight of eager fans, Nintendo released Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch as everything COVID-19 was unfolding. The game, focused on social connection and living life much like you would in a coronavirus-free world, is a nice escape for people unsure about the now.

But while the game is normally cute, mindless fun, one character in particular has left fans unsettled and constantly looking over their shoulders.

For the in-game Easter-themed event called Bunny Day, New Horizons enlists the help of Zipper T. Bunny, a yellow rabbit with a giant zip down his back. Zipper appears in the game a whopping 12 days prior to Bunny Day and hops around while enticing you to collect as many eggs as possible.

Upon first glance Zipper looks like any other villager but his huge bug eyes and giant zip give off a truly sinister vibe. When you pair this with Zipper’s strange behaviour, the dancing mascot quickly shifts from cute to down-right scary.

For example, a number of people noted that when you leave Zipper’s line of sight, he stops the act. Almost immediately after you leave, the “rabbit” stops jumping around and sighs in exhaustion — which makes it look like Zipper doesn’t even want to be doing any of this at all.

Also Zipper T. Bunny’s obsession with eggs seems to be overcompensating for something. Beyond his name and the back zipper implying that the character is not who he says he is, the dialogue in the game points to Zipper being a giant fraud.

“I know what you’re thinking,” Zipper says in New Horizons. “No. This is NOT a costume. And don’t you go snoopin’, got it?”

Looking eerily similar to the bloody bunny from Silent Hill 3, Zipper is only made to seem more alarming by his constant requests for you to stop trying to looking at his back and ask questions.

As people tried to understand who the hell Zipper was, they figured out ways to take peeks at the bunny’s giant silver zip. By using a reaction, you can distract the impostor long enough to get behind him and get a good look.

But this only angers the egg-loving rabbit more, who quickly turns around and warns you to stop snooping. “Seriously, cut that out! Last warning,” the annoyed mascot remarks.

While no one can quite figure out who Zipper T. Bunny really is, there have been some theories floating around. Some believe that it’s Timmy and Tommy hiding in the fur suit while others think that bell-hungry landlord Tom Nook is behind the horrifying rabbit who’s obsessed with seemingly useless eggs.

But one thing is for sure: Everyone playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons is scared of Zipper T. Bunny and will do anything to stop the maniac.

‘Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ is available on Nintendo Switch, which can be downloaded via the Switch eShop.
