Not even the humble Woolworths mud cake is safe from the insidious forces of political correctness. At least that’s what some people seem to think, given the outrage over the supermarket chain’s decision to sell a “Special Person’s Day” cake for Father’s Day.

Woolies has been inundated with complaints ever since a photo of the controversial cake went viral on Facebook and Twitter over the weekend.

In these politically charged times, and with the postal survey on marriage equality at the front of everyone’s minds, True Blue Aussies everywhere have been accusing the store of getting too political, undermining fatherhood and erasing gender.

Hundreds of people have sent the same photo to Woolworths since Saturday. It’s not clear where the original came from, or if it’s even real. Junkee has contacted Woolies for more info, but they responded.

Alongside the usual complaints of poor service and missing items, Woolies’ Facebook page is now full of outraged Aussies accusing the store of subverting Australian values.

People pledged to boycott the store.

A lot of people wondered if the cakes will also be sold on Mother’s Day, or if Woolies only hates dads.

And some people said they don’t even like the cakes!

Over on Twitter, it’s much the same. Here’s Woolies’ profile on Monday morning.

There’s More To The Cake Than Meets The Eye

An unedited version of the photo reveals that Woolies also celebrated Father’s Day yesterday, because of course it did.

All Woolies was trying to do was make sure everyone — especially people who have a more unconventional family makeup — was included in a day that can sometimes be difficult for people who don’t have a father.

A Woolies spokesperson tried to calm things down on Facebook, to no avail.

“We’re currently looking into this display with our store teams. We want to re-assure you that we’re helping all customers across Australia celebrate Father’s Day as seen from our store displays, products and recipe ideas. Cropped out of this image are a range of decorative cakes that have different messages on them, including ‘Dad’ and ‘Happy Father’s Day’, the spokesperson said.

At Least Some People Got It

But not everyone was upset, in amongst all the outrage on Facebook, some people popped in to thank Woolies’ for being considerate of other people who feel left out on Father’s Day.

Just remember, we’re only a few weeks into the postal survey, and there’s still two months to go!
