‘The Wizard Of Oz’ Meets ‘Game Of Thrones’ In The Expensive-Looking New Series ‘Emerald City’
The sexual tension between Dorothy and Scarecrow is super intense.
There have been some pretty strange takes on The Wizard of Oz over the years, from Sidney Lumet’s cult classic The Wiz, to the recent James Franco vehicle Oz the Great and Powerful (hard pass), to the criminally underappreciated Australian effort Oz: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Road Movie.
Now TV is getting in on the action, with NBC dropping the trailer for Emerald City, a high fantasy adaptation starring Adria Arjona as Dorothy and Vincent D’Onofrio(!) as the Wizard that in no way looks like a network knockoff of Game of Thrones.
Some of the visuals in this thing are pretty incredible, while other parts border on grimdark parody. For starters, the munchkins got shredded, plus the sexual tension between Dorothy and Scarecrow is super intense. Incidentally, that is not a sentence I thought I’d ever have to write.
Keep in mind NBC were also responsible for the gloriously, opulent mess that was Hannibal, so this could be amazing, or terrible, or both.
Emerald City premieres in the US on January 6.
