The directorial debut of indie film darling Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird is a coming-of-age comedy that could very well go down as the best film of 2018.

Set in the nostalgia-inducing period of 2002, the film follows a luminescent Saoirse Ronan as she navigates adolescence, a complex relationship with her mother, and the balance between ambition and reality in the sharply observed suburbs of Sacramento (Gerwig’s own hometown).

Gerwig’s witty exploration of American girlhood cleaned up the Golden Globes last week, taking out trophies for best film (comedy/musical) and best actress (comedy/musical) for Saoirse Ronan, and is expected to dominate The Oscars come March. The industry acclaim follows on from the film’s record-breaking 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
