Making fun of George W Bush was the go-to crowdpleaser for comedians, satirists and chain email-forwarding aunties throughout the 2000s. No one imagined there could be a world leader as gormless, un-self consciously hilarious and solidly mediocre as Dubya. It was a more innocent time when Australians felt secure in their smug supremacy over Americans, unaware that a human car-crash named Tony Abbott was barrelling towards us.

Since Dubya’s glory days, the bar for political stupidity has been raised astonishingly high; compared to the current crop of Republican Presidential candidates, the second Bush looks almost intellectual by comparison. At the very least, any excuse to bring Will Ferrell’s old Dubya impersonation out of cold storage is exceedingly welcome. On this week’s SNL, the 43rd President of the United States made a surprise return to announce he’s re-entering the race for the White House, confident that his decidedly modest abilities put him way out in front of Donald Trump.

“It’s a pretty good plot twist that I turned out to be the smart one.” Poor G.O.B Bush.
