NSW Is In A State Of Emergency
With 56 fires currently burning across the State, and 12 of them uncontained, Premiere Barry O’Farrell yesterday declared NSW to be in a state of emergency. The new measure gives all emergency services a broader capacity to deal with catastrophe, including the right to force evacuations, the right to order the public to leave or enter an area, and the right to demolish a building. The new measure makes it an offence for the public to disobey orders from state emergency services. “I’m sure it will be [controversial],” said NSW Rural Fire Services Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons. “There isn’t much in the fire-management business that isn’t controversial.”
Hotter and drier than expected conditions have combined with the fires already burning, with fears that tens of thousands of people will need to be mass evacuated. The official NSW property toll is 208 homes destroyed and 122 damaged. A 63-year-old man died while protecting his home against the fires on Friday.

Dolly Parton Finally Made Her Rap Debut
On an episode of The Queen Latifah show that aired over the weekend, Dolly Parton came on stage and, somewhat inexplicably and completely brilliantly, performed a hip hop number.
“Now I don’t hip and I don’t hop / I’ll black both eyes with this big top / I know the Queen has got ’em too / But she don’t work them like I do… Look at ’em go!”
She may or may not have started a beef with Miley Cyrus and/or Oprah, too.

Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary Special Has A New Teaser
A few weeks after nine long-lost Doctor Who episodes were recovered and released on iTunes — and three months since the first official trailer landed — the good people at the BBC have unloaded another minute-long teaser for the 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who, Matt Smith’s second last episode in the title role.

Kanye West Went On Tour
Kanye West kicked off his Yeezus tour in Seattle over the weekend, supported by Kendrick Lamar.
It started a little something like this:
The show, which reportedly began two hours late after an equipment truck was stolen, featured 27 songs packed into a two hour set, and a Jesus lookalike who turned up before ‘College Dropout’.
And yes, there was a giant mountain on stage.
