Wet Leg Wins Most Relatable Grammys Speech
"Thanks so much, what are we doing here?"
There’s nothing quite like watching emerging artists tackle the joy and horror of having their creative efforts recognised in real time.
Hailing from the Isle of Wight, the British group Wet Leg has been propelled far from their small island home since the release of their debut album, with Pitchfork praising the band for packaging catchy indie-rock riffs behind lyrics with a “keen eye for addressing self-delusion”.
Receiving three Grammy nominations in the alternative music category at the 2023 Grammy Awards alongside heavy hitters like Arctic Monkeys and Florence and the Machine, the band was visibly surprised after their single ‘Chaise Lounge’ won Best Alternative Music Performance.
The only problem with winning a Grammy award? The mandatory acceptance speech. “This is so funny,” vocalist Rhian Teasdale remarked on the eerily quiet stage. “Thanks so much, what are we doing here?”
But if the band thought they could relax for the rest of the evening, they were later interrupted by the announcement that their debut album had bested the competition to win the highly coveted Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.
“There is so many people out there who I think we should thank,” started drummer Henry Holmes in Wet Leg’s second acceptance speech. “But my mind has gone blank and I think I might wet myself.”
Wet Leg indeed!
