Strange things are afoot in the New Zealand capital, and only a crack team of special investigators can sort it out. Behold: the spooooooooky first trailer for Wellington Paranormal, the hotly anticipated TV spinoff of Taika Waititi’s hysterically funny vampire mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows.

The six part series sees actors Karen O’Leary and Mike Minogue reprise their roles as a pair of good-natured Wellington police officers. Only now they’re focusing solely on crimes of a supernatural nature, working under the command of Sergeant Maaka, played by Maaka Pohatu.

“Over the last few years there’s been a rise in the number of incidents that cannot be classified as ‘normal’,” Sergeant Maaka explains in the short promo. “They have to be considered ‘paranormal’.”

“I made them their own special folder,” he adds, holding up a manila folder. “It’s quite thick, see?”

This isn’t the only What We Do In The Shadows spinoff in the works. Waititi and co-writer Jemaine Clement are currently writing a sequel film following Rhys Darby’s werewolf pack. Meanwhile, a TV adaptation of the original movie set in New York will premiere in 2019.

Wellington Paranormal hits screens in New Zealand on July 11. An Australian release date has yet to be confirmed, although we’re confident we’ll get to see it before too long.
