Watch The Brilliant First Trailer For Baz Luhrmann’s New Netflix Show ‘The Get Down’
Baz is back!
Ever since 1992’s Strictly Ballroom, Baz Luhrmann has been the go-to director for lavish, over-the-top films that unashamedly tug at the emotions. Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby are classics in their own right, even if none of them quite live up to the lovable ridiculousness of his debut.

But now Luhrmann’s making a surprise move into the world of TV. The Get Down, a new 13-episode series that airs on Netflix sometime this year, tells the story of a group of young black kids growing up in the ’70s-era Bronx, right at the moment where disco began to make way for the rise of early hip-hop.
Starring Paper Towns‘ Justice Smith, Jimmy Smits and Will Smith’s kid Jaden as a graffiti artist, The Get Down‘s first trailer dropped earlier today. It doesn’t look half-bad.
That moment near the end where he admits he’s not okay may or may not have ripped my heart out a little. It’s okay, I’m fine. Just here under my desk, weeping.
