It’s been more than three decades since the release of Crocodile Dundee, but if you ask any random American about our country they will, without doubt, imagine a nation full of ageless Paul Hogans pulling knives on one another and battling a Jumanji-sized stampede of swole kangaroos on their daily commute. I say ‘imagine’ because there’s also a popular theory going around that our nation doesn’t exist at all.

Some Australians are trying to battle that impression. Others, like 18-year-old North Queensland resident Lee De Paauw are literally jumping head-first into it. This now-internet famous teen went viral last week after jumping into a crocodile-infested river to impress a girl and swiftly getting his arm bitten.

Now, Aussie expat and current Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng is simultaneously defending us and airing our shame to the world.

“Everybody thinks that Australians are just a crazy bunch of crocodile wrestlers,” he said, sitting alongside a bemused Trevor Noah. “Well let me just say this: you don’t know the half of it.”

“What pisses me off is idiots like this are why people think Australia is dangerous,” Cheing said, openly loving it. “I lived there for 10 years and nothing happened, okay? Australia is totally safe — as long as you stay out of the rivers because of the jellyfish, and the ocean because of the sharks, and the bush because of Redback spiders, and the outback… You know what? Basically, just stay in the Sydney Opera House. That’s where it’s totally safe… apart from the Opera House snakes.

“My point is: Australia can be dangerous IF YOU’RE A DUMBASS. But everywhere is dangerous is you’re a dumbass.”

Chieng then went on to give a definition of goon, because sure.

Missing Fruity Lexia, tbh.
