Goddamn, the future is exciting. We already have magical camera glasses, cars that drive themselves, robot SWAT teams, and, uh, whatever this thing is… What the heck could be next?

The Hollywood Reporter have just, well, reported that the upcoming Marvel flick Iron Man 3 is set to be screened in Japanese theatres using 4D technology.

4D. HOLY SHIT.

Back To The Future, Part II is almost a reality.

Back To The Future Part II is almost a reality.

To be honest, this kinda technology isn’t exactly new (for example, Avatar had a 4D premiere in South Korea a few years back), but it’s interesting to see that the trend’s actually expanding. According to the report, audience members will be able to “experience the Robert Downey Jr actioner complete with tilting and vibrating seats, blowing wind, fog and odour effects combined with what’s going on on-screen. The premium screens also have the facilities for raining bubbles down on an audience, and using lighting effects like strobes to heighten the cinematic experience.”

Oh man, “raining bubbles” AND “odour effects”! My childhood brain is exploding. This already sounds way more exciting than that old ‘ride’ at Warner Bros Movieworld on the Gold Coast, where they tried to make you believe that you would watch a movie and travel through time, but then you actually just ended up with Vincent Price hitting a ping-pong ball into your face.

Not to be nitpicky, but this would’ve been great technology to introduce around the time of Ratatouille or Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs or Julie And Julia. We’re pretty sure that Iron Man just smells like a scrap metal workshop. Tony Stark, on the other hand, might be easier on the nose; a nice combination of Drakkar Noir and Johnnie Walker. Basically, it’ll be like smelling our dads or something.

Iron Man 3 hits our boring ol’ cinemas on April 24.
