Vogue is facing backlash for removing a mention of Gigi Hadid’s support for Palestine on Instagram.

The half-Palestinian supermodel acknowledged the timing of Fashion Month’s schedule with ongoing world conflicts and vowed to financially show solidarity.

“I am pledging to donate my earnings from the Fall 2022 shows to aid those suffering from the war in Ukraine, as well as continuing to support those experiencing the same in Palestine,” she said on Monday AEDT time.

In a post the next day, the fashion magazine giant covered Hadid’s announcement with the original caption reflecting Gigi’s concisely: “Today, @Gigihadid announced that she will be donating all of her fashion month earnings towards relief efforts in Ukraine, as well as continuing to support those experiencing the same in Palestine.”

However, it was soon edited to remove mention of Palestine, and later read that Hadid was donating all of her Fashion Month earnings solely towards relief efforts in Ukraine instead.

Instagram users were quick to notice the edit and call out Vogue for erasing Palestine in the comments. On Thursday, a second update was made, where an Editor’s Note stated they had “updated this caption to accurately reflect Gigi Hadid’s statement on her donation”.

Vogue has not commented on why they changed the caption, as the original version used a direct quote from Hadid herself, however, Gawker noted that celebrity figures such as Entourage actress Emmanuelle Chriqui had accused the magazine of “fanning the flames of anti-Semitism”.

In May, Hadid defended social media posts calling for “equal rights for Palestinians” during the height of evictions in Sheikh Jarrah last year.

“Our eyes and hearts must be open to all human injustice. May we all see each other as brothers and sisters, beyond politics, beyond race, beyond religion,” said Hadid in her post this week. “Hands off Ukraine. Hands off Palestine. Peace. Peace. Peace.”
