In Case You Were Wondering, Velma From ‘Scooby-Doo’ Is Officially A Lesbian
We can ultimately thank a flirtatious encounter with a mermaid for the big news.
Long-held suspicions regarding the sexuality of Velma from Scooby-Doo have finally proven correct, with the Mystery Gang’s bookish strategist finally being confirmed as a lesbian.
The news of Velma’s sexuality is being proudly heralded across Twitter after a scene featuring the bespectacled character swooning over costume designer Coco Diablo went viral today.

As a little Halloween gift to the LGBTQI+ community — Velma will be portrayed as being very gay rather than just bi-curious in the upcoming film Trick Or Treat Scooby-Doo! — with ex-Scooby director James Gunn confirming that Velma would have come out ages ago were it not for pressure from major movie studios.
“In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” Gunn wrote on Twitter back in 2020. “But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version), and finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
Despite having an uncomfortable relationship with medical marijuana advocate Shaggy Rogers at one point, Velma’s character has now been enshrined as gay in official canon, with former supervising producer Tony Cervone pointing to a flirtatious mermaid interaction in Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated as proof Velma’s sexuality was being considered as early as 2011.
my favorite piece of the gay Velma lore is that canonically what made her reconsider her sexuality and eventually helped her realize she was a lesbian in SDMI is this fish lady as stated by the staff pic.twitter.com/SwNqoufLE9

“Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay,” Cervone revealed as part of pride month a few years ago. “There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago.”

And to think, dear readers, that major film executives would have gotten away with it (keeping Velma straight) if it weren’t for those meddling kids (the vibe shift)!
