David Lynch’s Twin Peaks revival was one of the most thrilling, unexpected cultural events of the last ten years.

Sure, Lynch is one of the premiere American artists of our time, and Twin Peaks one of the jewels in his crown. But it wasn’t necessarily guaranteed that he was going to knock it out of the park again. After all, how many revivals of nostalgic properties have been an utter disaster?

And, more than that, how many revivals have landed with a thud, ignored by a public who are more happy with the idea of a show rather than the actual experience of sitting down and watching something in our overcrowded age of content?

So, it was genuinely surprising when the Twin Peaks revival was not only magical, and boundary-pushing, and substantive in all of the ways that the original was, but that it was received as such by the general public. Quickly, The Return became a genuine cult object, obsessed over by a group of diehard devotees. For those who followed the show episode by episode, it still feels like a moment of calm and beauty in distinctly un-calm, ugly era for the consumption of art.

Well, looks like that gum that you like is coming back in style: there’s a lot of internet rumblings that suggest that Twin Peaks will be returning to our screen once more.

Let’s look at the facts.

Most compelling is a post by Kyle MacLachlan, the actor who plays Twin Peaks‘s Dale Cooper.

After all, ‘thinking about donuts’ sure does feel like a euphemism for ‘thinking about a Twin Peaks revival’.

Then there’s this tweet, from The Hollywood Horror Museum.

That seems to put a pretty clear timeline on when this stuff will be happening.

Then, there’s another, even less-cryptic tweet from actor Cullen Douglas, who plays the DJ in Twin Peaks‘s infamous episode eight.

Then there’s a social post from the show’s Michael Horse, spotted by AV Club writer Britt Hayes.

As Hayes points out, nobody necessarily expects that Lynch will drop an entire new season of the show in 2020. But Lynch could probably just about release a movie in under a year, if pre-production is mostly wrapped up.

Of course, there is some room for cynicism here: there’s a big old Twin Peaks boxset coming out soon, and it’s somewhat feasible that this could all be a marketing ploy for that.

But hey, Lynch has spent his career surprising us. For Twin Peaks fans, all this chatter could lead to the most exciting surprise of them all.
