There is perhaps no film franchise that better sums up the American project than Jackass.

It has it all, from homoeroticism, to chaos, to a strange, lopsided kind of beauty. To watch a Jackass movie is to see an empire in glorious decline; to see the desires of its subjects, to see their hopes and their dreams.

It’s also, of course, very funny. Joke for joke, there are few movies that so consistently hit the mark. How could one describe the pratfalls of Johnny Knoxville, the most inspired stuntman this side of Buster Keaton, as anything less than pure genius? Too many people denigrate the Jackass boys as being dumb, or crude. But it takes a lot of intelligence to craft punchlines — pun intended — this elegant. Haters be damned, the franchise is high art; a celebration of the human body, and all that it is capable of.

And now, after a long, long wait, the newest instalment in the series is finally almost upon us. Jackass Forever was originally delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, pushed back months when the world needed it most. But our days of hanging tight are finally complete. The film releases in just a few short weeks, on February 4 — and it couldn’t come soon enough.

The final trailer for the film, which dropped in the early hours of this morning, makes it clear that this will be a restatement of what makes the series special. There have been no attempts to reinvent the wheel; no changes to a formula that has served the gang for almost two decades. There’s people getting hit in the dick. There’s exploding toilet blocks. There’s cameos, most notably from fellow mayhem-maker Eric Andre. There’s dangerous animals. And there’s Johnny Knoxville, standing in the middle of it all, drinking up the madness like the demented circus ringmaster that he is.
