Comedies about young men trying to navigate adolescence aren’t exactly in short supply. Still, Netflix’s latest foray into familiar territory differentiates itself in one important way.

Set to debut on the streaming service in August, Atypical is about Sam (played by Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autism spectrum. According to Netflix, the eight-episode series is about his search “for love and independence”, and also explores his relationship with his parents (Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rapaport) and sister (Brigette Lundy-Paine).

The show’s creators apparently worked with Michelle Dean from the UCLA Center for Autism and Research and Treatment “to help guide an accurate depiction of autism spectrum disorder”. It’ll be interesting to see how the series balances that with the tropes of the coming-of-age genre (for what it’s worth, Sam’s burning desire to see boobs is a feeling many teen boys can relate to, regardless of how neurotypical they may be).

Atypical hits Netflix on August 11.
