The Nation’s Favourite Beer Anthem ‘I Feel Like Tooheys’ Is Back For 2023

A celebration of beating the odds when the chips are down, Australia’s biggest beer singalong ‘I Feel Like A Tooheys’ has officially been revamped almost 45 years after it first aired.
Like an image burnt into an old tv, who can forget that immortal call and response that had the nation celebrating back in 1978? “How do you feel?” “I feel like a Tooheys!”. Written and sung by Allan Johnston, the original ad showcased a range of quintessentially Aussie situations from scraping a victory in the test cricket to paddling out past some terrifying waves in men’s beach rowing.
While that spirit of fighting against the odds and those 80’s haircuts remain as relevant as ever, the sports-heavy context of the original ad that had an entire generation singing has been sorely missing from Australian tv sets. Now, Tooheys have retrofitted the jingle in a big way, along with a tv campaign that reflects the big gigs and big games of contemporary modern Australian culture.
In the fresh ad, we see a pub rock n roll band C.O.F.F.I.N. suddenly faced with every musician’s worst nightmare: a power outage. Seizing the moment, the group’s drummer uses his conveniently acoustic instrument to wow the audience with a sweaty drum solo as power is restored.
In another ad spot, Tooheys capture that ever-so-rare rugby league magic of sneaking a victory in the jaws of defeat, and while the camera and sound quality has been pushed to 11, it still feels as inspiring as it did back in the 1980’s! Especially since the original songwriter Allan Johnston nets himself a sneaky cameo.
