That Cooked ‘Sunrise’ Segment Got Absolutely Torn Apart By Nakkiah Lui on ‘Tonightly’
"We can't see another generation of clueless, white, media pundits left to just talk out their asses about complicated, deeply complicated issues on national television."
In an extremely spicy example of parody done well, Tonightly With Tom Ballard has tackled that very fucked segment on Sunrise which straight-up called for the return of the policies that led to the Stolen Generations. They’re calling for the removal of white TV hosts from the “distressing” environment of morning television — for their own welfare of course.
“Obviously it’s heartbreaking to see people like Prue MacSween and Ben Davis saying stupid shit on breakfast television — they’re clearly distressed, they’re probably in danger. In the interest of their own welfare, should they be removed from that environment?” says Tom Ballard, introducing the segment.
In case you missed it, Sunrise decided they were absolutely the right vehicle to discuss the federal Assistant Minister for Children David Gillespie’s, announcement that he wanted to “relax” the rules around the adoption of Aboriginal children to make it easier for “white families” in particular to adopt them.
Sunrise’s very good and sensitive way to discuss this issue was to get host Samantha Armytage to chat with two white radio shock jocks, Prue MacSween and Ben Davis. Love to get a bunch of white people to talk about the forced adoption of Aboriginal children.
“Should WHITE families be allowed to adopt abused Aboriginal children?” Sunrise asked.
In response, Tonightly sent up the screwed-up segment, inviting Nakkiah Lui and Enoch Mailangi to come onto the show and discuss what should be done about the neglect of ignorant white TV reporters in dangerous situations.
“We can’t see another generation of clueless, white, media pundits left to just talk out their asses about complicated, deeply complicated issues on national television. It’s dangerous and it’s crazy to me that people are arguing against this,” says Nakkiah Lui.
“Well other people have been removed from Sunrise for their own wellbeing, like Melissa Doyle and Grant Denyer… they’re being looked after now.”
