2015’s final SNL just went to air, with arguably the best guest hosts of the year in Amy Poehler and Tina Fey returning to their old stomping ground to show the new bloods how it’s done. What transpired was probably the best single episode of SNL since the glory days — a perfect mixture of homages, biting gags, no-holds-barred showmanship and total ridiculousness.

The old characters they made so iconic, like Fey’s Sarah Palin, got a fresh run in a Christmas Carol-esque meeting between the ghosts of Hillarys past and present. The moment Poehler’s 2008-era Hillary meets Kate McKinnon’s 2015-era Hillary is wonderful, and full of aggressive hand-holding.

Amy Schumer stopped by to help the duo lampoon Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ and general #squadgoals aesthetic, as did Robert Downey Sr., who is literally just the famous guy’s dad, and the real-life gynaecologist that Fey and Poehler genuinely share, apparently.

But arguably the best gag of the night was ‘Meet Your Second Wife’, a cringe-inducing game show where schlubby men in their thirties meet the school-age children who they will one day marry as their current wives look on from the audience. (BONUS: the audio of the gag’s first ten seconds is a bit screwy, and watching Bobby Moynihan try to keep a straight face while the recording stop-starts and the audience slowly realises what’s going on is pretty great.)

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were always slated to play at the end, but they managed to one-up themselves by sneaking Paul freaking McCartney onstage to play the tambourine and jump around like an excited five-year-old as they played ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’.

Seriously. Best episode ever.
