Tim Burton Is Making A Live-Action ‘Dumbo’ Starring Will Smith For Some Reason

I only have one question: how is this going to work?

Disney’s latest obsession with creating live-action remakes of their popular films seems to be paying off — The Jungle Book was a massive critical and commercial smash and it looks like Beauty and the Beast will be similarly popular. But there’s something about a live-action remake of the 1941 film Dumbo, that seems a very odd choice.

Maybe this is because Tim Burton is developing the project, and while his gothic sensibilities fit stories like Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo seems like a very earnest film to tackle. It could be because Will Smith is now attached to the movie (presumably as a human character and not the voice of Dumbo — but who knows!). There’s something about a live-action Dumbo that is so difficult to imagine.

When the film was announced, Disney that the remake would “add a unique family story that parallels Dumbo’s journey” so it sounds like it might deviate from the original quite a bit. Looking forward to seeing a CGI elephant fly, though.
