Watch These TikTok Legends Parody The Media’s Coverage Of Albanese And ScoMo
It's the ScoMo impression for me.
Something that’s guaranteed in any election is biased media coverage, and a couple of TikTokers are perfectly demonstrating exactly how the mainstream media covers ScoMo compared to Albo.
It’s no secret that the mainstream Australian press, primarily owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, favours the Liberal party in its reporting. Just yesterday, Deakin University scholar, Dr Scott Burchill went viral for calling out News Corp’s bias toward the Liberal Party. Dr Burchill criticised the Murdoch press for being a “PR outfit for the government”, while also claiming that Nine Entertainment is a “mini-Murdoch”.
Dr Burchill’s iconic call out notwithstanding, a couple of young folks on TikTok have hilariously demonstrated News Corp’s double standard. In a (so far) three-part series called ‘how the media portrays Albo vs Scomo’, TikTok account mates.rates parody how News Corp catastrophises Anthony Albanese’s every move.
In this first of the TikTok series, one of the account’s users is pretending to be Albanese, fumbling a handshake into a fist. The TikTok quickly cuts to a mocked-up Sydney Morning Herald front-page headline that asks if Albanese “will fist the economy”. It also parodies News Corp’s unchecked approval of the Morrison government, showing a fake press conference where one of the users pretends to be Morrison answering a question about flood policy by claiming he believes in miracles so is taking a holiday to Vatican City. Naturally, the video cuts to another mocked-up Sydney Morning Herald front page, but this one asks if Morrison is “Moses returned?”
The TikToks satirise News Corp’s fixation on linking every single Labour party snafu to their alleged inability to manage the economy. It’s a well-documented fixation, even Kevin Rudd reflected on the Murdoch press’ influence on his Prime Ministership in a 2019 op-ed for the Guardian.
