Thornhill Absolutely Crush Their ‘Like A Version’ Cover, With Help From ‘Twilight’ Soundtrack
Yes, they covered *that* song.
Australian metalcore band Thornhill have channelled the energies of vampire rom-drama Twilight in their explosive Like A Version, covering ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ by Muse.
The Melbourne five-piece’s version almost completely eclipses the 2006 hit, with lead vocalist Jacob Charlton’s own high registered vocals matching the signature falsetto of Muse frontman Mathew Bellamy with aplomb. Charlton says the decision to cover Muse for Like A Version came after searching for songs that matched Thornhill’s instrumentation that remained in his singing register.
“I don’t think there was a lot of songs that we were looking at that suited my voice and also the instruments,” Charlton told triple j. “I only really know that song, to be honest, and I only know it from that movie — the Twilight soundtrack.”
While the band describe the soundtrack of the 2008 film adaptation of the popular vampire series as ‘Peak’, guitarist Ethan McCann admitted that he has a “love-hate relationship” with Muse.
“In high school, our musical teacher beat Muse into us every single class to the point we just hated them,” McCann told triple j. “It wasn’t until I was probably three of four years out of school until I could deal with it again.”
The band have previously had extensive airplay on triple j in Darwin, after a daylight savings glitch led to their metalcore single ‘Lily & The Moon’ being broadcast on repeat for four hours.
