The news that Ricky Gervais’ iconic character from The Office, David Brent, was coming back for a dedicated movie was met with a fairly divided reception when announced last year.

On the one hand, Brent was one of the most fascinating comic creations of his era. His outrageous hubris and offensive behaviour was perfectly offset with a genuinely depressing hollowness which functioned as a broad indictment of all the grab-assing fuckwits we have to put up with in the real world. His return to the screen was exciting in that it would let us see him flounder in the present-day: an F-grade reject of a bygone era of casual discrimination being throughly put in his place.

On the other hand, even if you love him, this behaviour doesn’t make for the most pleasant viewing experience. The original series of The Office provided near-intolerable levels of cringe and it looks like David Brent: Life On The Road will deliver about the same. Case in point: here’s a new clip from the film which features a human resources rep advising Brent not to make jokes that would offend people in the office and him responding by air-honking her boobs.

If your eyelids haven’t already involuntarily seized shut from the pain in that encounter, here’s a clip of him singing about maybe banging a woman in the forest with a bandana around his neck like an oversized french bulldog. It’s from an album accompanying the film, which will also include ‘Free Love Freeway’.

Hoo boy, this is going to be interesting.

David Brent: Life On The Road is in cinemas from August 25. Watch the full trailer here.
