This LEGO® Ice Cream Truck Situation Just Made My Week/Life/Year
LEGO building is the perfect activity this summer
I’ve always loved building with LEGO® bricks.
When I was a kid I was obsessed with colour-coding my LEGO Minifigures or building houses that I envisioned living in one day. (This was very much pre-cost of living crisis.) I wanted to grow up in a LEGO world, where everything was made entirely out of the iconic bricks.
And it looked like my dream had come one step closer to reality when I watched this video of a LEGO ice cream truck down at the beach. I thought I had entered some kind of fever dream from my childhood. How was this even possible? The LEGO ice cream looks equal parts mouth-watering and something you want to play with… which is strange, in a good way. This was truly an Aussie surprise from the LEGO brand. One that perfectly evokes Australian Christmas, in all its sun-dappled glory.

For me, the ice cream truck perfectly combines everything that made Christmas special as a kid – the warmth of the summer sun, family beach time, the smell of the bbq sizzling, and, of course, LEGO bricks. Each year, Santa would bring us extravagant LEGO sets that transported us to worlds of endless adventures. The true magic unfolded when we combined sets to form alternate realities. One year we created a space jungle scene, where astronauts explored an ancient jungle with dinosaurs and alien invaders.
The building possibilities were endless, and they didn’t stop with childhood. Every Christmas season, our family reunion transforms into a LEGO building extravaganza. My little cousins, buzzing with excitement, become master builders and the living room transforms into a vibrant canvas. This year, we’re set to create a Santa Wonderland with an Aussie twist. After all, even Santa could use a break from the cold of the North Pole.
And we’re not the only ones doing fantastic things with LEGO. TikTokers are building the Titanic and Van Gogh’s Starry Night. And I recently discovered that the LEGO brand also makes plants I can’t overwater and kill. (In all seriousness, the way LEGO Botanical sets have been used to decorate Christmas trees and make terrariums are very cute.)
There is literally no limit to what you can create with LEGO bricks — it’s crazy that the bricks I once used to construct homes for me and my friends as a kid, both real and imaginary, continue to dazzle me with such miraculous installations as an adult. This year for my Christmas shopping I’ll be heading to the new LEGO store in Sydney (the largest in the world) to get the Friends Botanical Garden for my niece. (She loves flowers.) The Technic Bugatti Bolide for my dad. (He loves cars.) The DUPLO Lightning McQueen & Mater’s Car Wash Fun for my little cousin. (It’s his first LEGO set.) You get a LEGO set. You get a LEGO set. You get a LEGO set. Everybody gets LEGO sets! And when I’m down at the beach with my family this Christmas, full of grilled prawns and good vibes, dressed in my Santa-themed swimmers, I’m sure I’ll catch myself looking around, hoping to hear the familiar jingle from the LEGO ice cream truck.
