She's fine. She's a little disillusioned, but she's fine.

Six-year-old Maisie Gregory had the great pleasure of greeting the Queen after she bestowed honours on the Royal Welsh army in Cardiff. The daughter of the regimental Sargeant Major who was leading the main march, Maisie woke up at 4.45am, begrudgingly put on a traditional Welsh dress and patiently waited for the Queen with a small bouquet of flowers.

“Maisie is excited,” her dad told Wales Online, before the big day. “Every time I come home she asks how long it is until she meets the Queen. It’s been on her mind for about a month and she has told everyone at school.”

This is Maisie. She is just as cute as you might imagine.

Everything started out well. She handed over the flowers, she did a painfully sweet little curtsey, and the Queen told her she was “very pretty”. But as this — the biggest moment-to-date in her young life — came to its end and the matriarch of the Royal Family and esteemed leader of the Commonwealth continued on to her car, Maisie was swiftly struck in the face by a lance corporal.

Some important things:

– She’s fine.

– It was an accident.

– The soldier quickly apologised.

– Her family have made light of it.

I don’t know if any of that makes it okay to laugh, but it’s sure not stopping everyone else. Welcome to the real world, Maisie. It’s fucking terrible.
