It’s actually happening.

Overnight, Fox locked in the rumour they started back in January, confirming that they would be bringing the X-Files back for a six-episode event series, helmed by series creator Chris Carter, and starring Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny. The second re-boot since the 2008 feature film, X-Files: I want to Believe, production will begin in the US summer.

Since the original show was cancelled in 2002, after a nine-year run, David Duchovny has gone on to play novelist Hank Moody in the fairly questionable Californication, and written, for some reason, an extremely bizarre children’s book about a dairy cow, a turkey, a pig and the conflict in the Middle East.

Gillian Anderson meanwhile, has been in Hannibal and The Fall, and remains, as always, an undeniable babe.

The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning,” said Dana Walden and Gary Newman from Fox Television Group.

“Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

Considering the fanaticism that’s followed series like Black Mirror, Orphan Black and Fringe, the re-boot makes sense; it’ll be interesting to see whether Chris Carter weaves in modern themes. Julian Assange?  The deep web? …BENGHAZI?
