‘The OC’ House Is Up For Sale! Here’s What You Can Buy In Sydney For Around The Same Price

Californiaaaaaaa, here we come.

From its first episode, as we were introduced to the constantly brooding, constantly leather jacketed Ryan Atwood casting dispirited glances at idyllic beaches and palatial houses, The OC was always about ludicrous wealth. It was set in the affluent area of Newport Beach, Orange County. Its characters always had the most on-trend cargo pants and flared jeans. Its early plot points included Ryan wandering the neighbourhood and assaulting random rich kids.

Now, one of the biggest symbols of all that is up for grabs: the Cohen’s family home has just been put on the market. For reasons I will never quite understand, its current owners are leaving their beautiful and iconic house and offering it up to cashed-up fans for $6.25 million (about AUD$8.7 million).

Though it’s actually located in Malibu instead of Newport Beach, the six-bedroom mansion measuring 1,943 square-metres is incredibly impressive, boasting a library, a sunroom, an office, a formal dining area, seven bathrooms, and stunning views of both the ocean and surrounding parklands. However, as it was only used for shots around the driveway and entrance, it’s lacking certain features.

While this news has caused much excitement with fans around Australia, California seems like pretty far to travel for something that doesn’t quite match your expectations; particularly when we already have our own version of the OC so nearby. Here are a few more convenient options which are currently listed at a similar price range in Sydney:

This Resplendent Beachside Villa!

1

This rustic three-storey building is approximately six times smaller than Cohen’s estate at 300 square-metres, but has “great potential for development.” Located in Sydney’s small beachside suburb of Elizabeth Bay, you can literally stumble out of bed and onto the beach, after a ten-minute walk.

Though its price is currently up for negotiation, this is listed on Domain among the properties going for more than $5 million.

This Mysterious Party Mansion!

2

Live it up in the “penthouse atmosphere” of this versatile gem on the “CBD fringe”. It may have 1,000 fewer square metres than the Cohen’s, but it also has air conditioning, a bike rack, and an old brick balcony where you can kind of see the city! Remember when Ryan and Luke burned down that model home?

Welcome home.

Currently accepting expressions of interest, this is listed on realestate.com.au among the properties going for more than $5 million.

This Irresistible Hostel!

Granted: this is a splurge. With the auction starting at $15 million, this is set to be sold for more than double the price of the original OC mansion. But, for that money you get 40 rooms set for budget accommodation, an old concrete pool, a bunch of coin-operated drink machines, and ten kitchens — five of which are operational!

This property is currently listed on Domain.

With median house prices higher in Sydney than California, The OC has never looked so attainable.
