The Matrix is one of those elliptical, rare blockbusters that gives out whatever you bring to it.

Is it an allegory about the trans experience? Yes, if you want it to be. Is it an exploration of the ways that our digital and IRL lives collide? Yes, that too. Is it an impeccable action film, one that revolutionised the look and feel of fight sequences for literal years? Yes, it works on that level too.

Indeed, its nuance feels more radical than ever these days. Hollywood blockbusters have become increasingly one-note, franchise-builders rather than Rorschach tests. Which is precisely why it’s so exciting that The Matrix is back, with a fourth entry in the franchise set to drop before the end of the year.

Plot details on the new instalment have been kept pretty under wraps — we don’t know much about the film, save that it will re-team Keanu Reeves’ Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity. Other than that, all we have to go off are behind-the-scenes details about the cast and crew, most notably that only one of the film’s original directing duo, The Wachowski Sisters, is back.

The new teaser for the film doesn’t give much more information either. It’s more of a mood piece than anything else, filled with portentous voice-over, shots of Neo walking menacingly towards a mysterious locale, and of course, the famous blue pill/red pill choice.

But don’t worry: the full trailer for the film is set to drop in a mere two days. Chances are, we’ll have more meat to sink our teeth into then. Until that trailer drops, why not just watch this incredible teaser over and over. Or, go back and rewatch the original teaser — it’ll undoubtedly be better than you remember. (Yes, even the unfairly-maligned sequels, bloated but idea-dense flawed masterpieces.)

The teaser is here. Get ready.
