The Matildas Just Beat Brazil In The FIFA Women’s World Cup, Are Through To The Quarter Finals
Waltzing Matildas.
The Women’s World Cup in Canada has been largely flying under the radar so far; it’s been overshadowed somewhat by the ongoing FIFA corruption scandal and John Oliver’s malevolent glee thereof, and while SBS has been airing the whole thing live the time difference means that most matches are being played in the wee hours of the morning.
But the success of Australia’s Matildas is going to keep a lot of people up at night over the next couple of weeks — the Matildas just knocked tournament favourites Brazil out of the running with a 1-0 victory overnight, and people are just now waking up to the news.
The win puts the Matildas through to the quarter-fnals, where they’ll face off against either Japan or the Netherlands. Australia lost their first game to the USA 3-1 before scoring a 2-0 victory over Nigeria and a 1-1 draw with Sweden.
