The Game Of Thrones/It’s Always Sunny Crossover Is Really Happening

And other things we learned from Glenn Howerton's Reddit AMA.

The ninth season of the brilliantly dark It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia kicks off on September 4. Glenn Howerton, who portrays the handsome sociopath Dennis Reynolds, participated in a Reddit AMA today, and revealed some surprising things about himself and the show.

Howerton spoke about the future of the Paddy’s Pub gang, about his weird workout routine, and even obliquely addressed the question of whether or not Dennis is a serial killer. Here are the five most important things we learned from his AMA.

Game Of Thrones’ Benioff and Weiss wrote an upcoming episode

There has long been talk of the potential hilarity in a Game Of Thrones/Always Sunny crossover. Howerton today confirmed that this is actually happening, saying that Thrones executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have penned an episode.

“It’s going to be called ‘Flowers For Charlie’,” he said. “I’m not sure when it will air. They were great to work with. Smart as hell.”

The title is presumably a riff on the novel ‘Flowers For Algernon’, about a man with an IQ of 68 who becomes a genius after experimental surgery, then regresses intellectually and dies.

Charlie is already a genius, of course, but ‘Flowers For Charlie’ is shaping up to be the best episode of television this year. Everybody else can go home.

Howerton’s workout regime is odd to say the least

Dennis Reynolds is very proud of his body — he likes to keep it tight so he can pop his shirt off in any situation, and creepily admire himself in front of the mirror.

When asked how he manages to look this good, Howerton explained his unusual workout regimen. “I usually just bounce around, pick up heavy shit and toss it all over the gym,” he said. “It’s a little unconventional, but it works, legs, core and upper body.”

He also added that he likes a balanced workout. “I do legs every day,” he said. “I never want to be that top heavy guy at the gym. Very unhealthy.”

Dennis is definitely a sociopath, and may or may not be a killer

Over the years, the characters on It’s Always Sunny have stagnated, and turned into the worst, dirtiest versions of themselves. In recent seasons, the darkness beneath Dennis Reynolds’ handsome exterior has slowly come out, leading many to the theory that he is an actual serial killer.

The evidence for Dennis’s sociopathic tendencies is pretty compelling. He takes women to a secret room in the basement of Paddy’s Pub. He keeps zip ties in the trunk of his car. At one point, he casually let slip that he doesn’t have feelings. Also, this:

Howerton has known about the character’s darkness since the start. “I always knew he was socio, I just wasn’t ready to go all the way with it at first,” he said. “It’s been fun to tease it out and let it build over the years.”

When asked outright if Dennis was a killer, he didn’t respond directly, instead just choosing to say he has “all the answers” in his head.

Aaron Paul was almost on Always Sunny this year

Breaking Bad hottie Aaron Paul is a self-confessed Always Sunny fan; he even spoke about it in his own Reddit AMA earlier this year, and indicated that he’d like to guest star at some point.

Sadly, however, this won’t be happening for a while. “We love Aaron and tried to get him on the show this year,” Howerton said. “Unfortunately, we had scheduling conflicts.”

Aww. For now, you’ll just have to be content imagining Paul as a member of the mouth-breathing McPoyle clan, or maybe another rapping love interest for Sweet Dee.

Nobody’s quite sure when the show will wrap up

Along with several other FX shows like The League and Legit, It’s Always Sunny is switching networks this year, to the new, youth-focused FXX network. Long-standing rumours hold that the show will wrap up after its tenth season, and the move re-ignited speculation.

When asked about it, Howerton was noncommittal. “We haven’t decided when to end it yet,” is all he said, leaving the possibility of future seasons open-ended.

Does this meant that years from now, we  might see a decrepit, elderly Dennis and Dee sniping at each other in hospital beds like their Nazi grandfather? We can only hope.
