For many, the Superbowl means sports, but for blockbuster fanatics? The Superbowl contains the alluring promise of BIG half time trailer premieres, and the trailer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier looks crisp, intriguing and chockers with feisty catty banter between its two leads.

True to Disney’s form with Marvel projects these days, things are being held close to the chest. The official synopsis is expectedly vague:

“Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

The trailer offers a little more detail and sees Falcon aka Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), and the Winter Soldier aka Bucky Barnes begrudgingly joining forces to tie up loose criminal ends that have gained strong footholds in a post-snap world.

Specifically, we see (and hear) Zemo, one of Bucky’s Soviet captors we last saw Captain America: Civil War, promising to finish what he started.

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Steve Rogers passed his famous shield and thus the mantle of Captain America onto Sam. However, perhaps that mantle is destined to be somewhat shared, judging from scenes glimpsed in the new trailer. While Sam is holding the shield, and even throwing it in combat, Bucky can also be seen catching it from him.

Both Bucky and Sam have held the mantle and title of Captain America throughout various iterations of the comics. In the MCU, Steve made it clear that the shield and what it represents would be Sam’s before (presumedly) passing away.

It’s clear from this trailer the pair’s shared grief over the death of their mutual best friend, Captain America, has not eased their contentious dislike for each other. In fact, it seems to have made things worse.

The trailer’s main thematic thread consists mainly of borderline married-couple bickering between the two men. One scene even shows them in some sort of pairs counselling or interrogation.

But there are some other familiar faces as well. We get a brief peek at Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) kicking some ass in combat with the boys. MCU fans have not seen SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter since Captain America: Civil War.

Sharon is, of course, the niece of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) who was the great love of Steve’s life. So, it checks out that she’d be connected to a series exploring Captain America’s legacy.

Between WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki— Marvel fans are in for many a treat this year. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is due to premiere on the 19th of March, 2021, and will be streaming exclusively on Disney Plus.
