The Trailer For ‘The Crown’ Season 5 Is Here And It’s The ’90s, Baby
Pour one out for the Revenge Dress.
While the Queen may be no more, The Crown pushes on unabated, with the new trailer for Season 5 dropping overnight.
The new series finally takes us into the ’90s: a time when rumours about Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship were rife, and public scrutiny of Diana was going into turbo mode — with journalist Martin Bashir (Prasanna Puwanarajah) seen in the trailer saying that Diana was at “breaking point”. This was also the decade, of course, that Diana tragically died in a car accident.
We also get our first look at Elizabeth Debecki in the iconic Revenge Dress that Diana wore in 1994 after Charles admitted on TV that he cheated on her while they were married.
The Australian actor recently told Entertainment Weekly that wearing the dress was “very significant and quite powerful”, but also “provoked something” in her as a performer. “I can’t really explain it,” Debecki said. “It’s pretty incredible that a dress would represent a moment in history, or that this human’s life would represent so much and become so iconic. So that was a big day on set for me!”
She added that she was surprised at how “entranced” her friends and family were about the prospect of her wearing the dress when she landed the part. “When it became known that I had the part, I received these text messages saying congratulations, [but] there was also a huge amount of text messages about the Revenge Dress. ‘Do you get to wear the Revenge Dress?’ ‘Oh my God, you get to wear the Revenge Dress!'”
The new season will also see the arrival of Imelda Staunton as the Queen, after Claire Foy and Olivia Colman helmed the role in previous seasons. The trailer also gives us a sneak peek of Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, and Dominic West as Prince Charles.
