It’s not often that you write a letter, and a dog responds back.

But for Jack McCrossan and his three roommates, that’s exactly what happened last week. Jack, a 23-year-old graduate engineer, currently resides in Bristol, England where his tenancy agreement doesn’t allow for pets of any kind.

But after Jack and his fellow engineering roommates Chris, Iwan and James, saw his neighbours dog they were instantly smitten. “We had seen glimpses of our neighbours dog, but weren’t sure if she lived with them,” Jack told Junkee. “One night we saw her looking out the window at us and thought she must be a permanent member of the house.”

“Iwan kept saying he was going to write a letter asking if we could walk her sometime,” he continued. “The worst that could happen was we got ignored.”

But fortunately for the boys they weren’t ignored. After a couple of days, their four-legged neighbour, Stevie Ticks, sent a letter back.

The boys’ letter opened with a little about themselves: “We are four engineers that have recently moved into the area in the past 3-4 months. Our house is comprised of an Englishman, two Scotts and a Welshman. Diversity.”

“We noticed a four-legged friend looking at us out the window… he or she looked like the good-est boy/girl there is,” the letter continued. “If you ever need someone to walk him/her, we will gladly do so. If you ever get bored… we are more than happy to look after him/her.”

“If you want to come over and bring him/her to brighten up our day, you are more than welcome,” the group wrote. “If you want to walk past our balcony windows so we can see him/her, please do.”

The four boys, who all grew up with pets like cats, hamsters, dogs and guinea pigs, noted they were missing having an animal of their own. “The adult life is a struggle without one,” the four noted before signing off as “The boys from number 23”.

Addressed to “The Boys”, Stevie Tick’s wholesome response was stamped with her paw print. Her letter detailed a little more about herself and her love for treats of all kinds.

The rescue German Shepherd and Labrador mix used the letter to confirm that the boys were right, and that she indeed is “the bestest girl”.

“I am very friendly and full of beans. I love meeting new people and it would be great if we could be friends,” Stevie Ticks wrote. “I must warn you that the price of my friendship is five ball throws a day and belly scritches whenever I demand them.”

The letter concluded with contact information for the pups “servant” so that they could arrange a meet-up. “Looking forward to mlemming you,” Stevie Ticks signed off before sticking the letter to the boys’ door.

Jack found the sweet letter as he left for work. “We knew it was good news with the dog print on the envelope,” Jack told Junkee. “We were all pretty excited about the idea of getting to dog-sit or go for walks.”

After sharing the encounter on Twitter, Jack’s tweet went viral with over 450,000 likes. People quickly became obsessed with how wholesome the entire encounter was from start to end, and started demanding updates on the flourishing relationship.

So, the boys set up a time to meet with Stevie and were sure to document the encounter, posting a photo to Twitter updating those invested in their story.

When asked if the boys and Stevie would continue their mutually-beneficial relationship, Jack said it was likely. “I think we’ll definitely be taking Stevie for some walks again in the future,” Jack told Junkee. “It was a good way to meet the neighbours too, they were both really nice about the whole thing!”

Stevie Ticks also shared a review of the much-anticipated meeting on her Instagram, which Jack reckons you should follow if you want to see updates on her. “20/10 for scritches, did mlem, snaccs given,” Stevie Ticks said. “5/5 Uber rating, would meet again!”
