Westworld has made something of a habit of being, deeply, deeply confusing.

The show is a moody, muddled tangle of plot twists, existential ruminations on the nature of humankind, and esoteric riddles. Heck, even the promotional stunts for the show are mind-meltingly odd: remember when showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy pretended they were going to spoil the entirety of season two to stop smart viewers from guessing it?

Well, as far as abrupt left turns go, the trailer for season three is as much of a directional change as Nolan and Joy could make without driving off the side of a goddamn cliff.

For a start, we have a bunch of fresh faces, including but not limited to insidious and be-suited Frenchman Vincent Cassel, who spends the trailer marching imposingly towards the camera, Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul, who spends the entire thing looking lost and confused, as well as rising star Lena Waithe and rapper Kid Cudi.

Then there’s the issue of setting. Gone are the sweeping vistas of season one and two, replaced by a futuristic Los Angeles and a brand new theme park, this one set in Nazi Germany and filled with menacing S.S. officers.

Oh, and finally, the familiar faces that are returning look haggard and haunted. The trailer gives us a peak at the Man In Black (Ed Harris) as he glares hatefully at the sky; Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright), sporting a big bushy beard and a look that says the world has not been kind to him in the interim since season two; and Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), who looks as sleek and predatory as ever, cruising around L.A. with a gun in her hand.

Basically, the whole thing is two and a half minutes of moody table-setting. Couldn’t tell you what the hell any of it means, but hey — that’s the joy of the show.

Westworld season three hits our screens some time in 2020.
