Taron Egerton is probably best known for portraying Eggsy in the Kingsman films: a super-spy who’s kind of a modern take on the Artful Dodger, if the Artful Dodger was a morally unhinged sociopath who loved guns and anal sex.

What Egerton has always been less historically well-known for is his extraordinary singing voice — that is, until now. After all, as we gear up to the release of Rocketman, a biopic about the life of Elton John that stars Egerton in the central role, it makes sense that the young Brit is going to be trotting out his pipes a whole dang lot.

Case in point: while the very bad music biopic Bohemian Rhapsody was uncomfortably cleaning up at the Oscars, the actor and John himself were belting out a version of the classic ‘Tiny Dancer’, proving in the process what’s actually required to portray a celebrated musician.

The performance took place as part of the annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, and was apparently completely impromptu, which only makes it that much more impressive.

Egerton, who seems visibly moved at the beginning of the above clip, has described portraying John as the highlight of his career to date. And John, by all reports, has been in turn distinctly impressed by the young actor’s performance, who he claims is the only person who’s ever sung some of his classics as well as the bejewelled balladeer himself.

Rocketman, which has been helmed by Dexter Fletcher (coincidentally the man who took over the directing of Bohemian Rhapsody after alleged paedophile Bryan Singer went AWOL), has been described as a colourful musical fantasy, full of flights of fancy and scene-stealing wig-work.

Indeed, if Rocketman turns out to be as impressive as early reports are suggesting, Egerton might find himself at the actual Oscars next year, rather than just a viewing party.

Rocketman his Australian cinemas this May.
