If you’re a Sydney resident who catches a bus to work or uni, we’ve got bad news. More than 1,000 Sydney bus drivers are going on strike on tomorrow, impacting services across the inner-west, western suburbs and south Sydney.

The 24 hour strike has been called in response to the NSW government’s decision to privatise a huge chunk of Sydney’s bus services. This week the state transport minister, Andrew Constance, announced he was privatising bus routes between Kensington in the eastern suburbs and Strathfield in the west.

According to the government the decision to outsource bus services to the private sector is being driven a high number of customer complaints. However data released by Transport for NSW, the state transport agency, showed that 89 percent of bus users were satisfied with the service.

Bus drivers are furious at the decision and their union has called it an “outrageous action”.

Tomorrow’s strike will impact services around Balmain, Glebe, Marrickville, Wolli Creek, Brighton-Le-Sands, Sans Souci, Leichhardt, Strathfield, Canada Bay, Drummoyne, Olympic Park and Silverwater.

Chris Preston, the secretary of the Rail, Train and Bus Union’s bus division, said drivers were “deeply apologetic” about the impact the strike would have on commuters, but blamed the NSW government.

Hopefully your boss is a nice person and will understand if you’re a little late because of the bus strike.
