Perfect Match: Questions To Ask Before Sharing Spotify With Your Significant Other

1. Do they listen to death metal?

Premium Duo. Two accounts, one plan. All the Premium benefits.

No relationship milestone says you’ve officially locked it down like the decision to share your accounts.

Whether it’s an account for money, TV or music, the perks to sharing are undeniable. But it’s important to think it through and freak yourself out just the right amount before committing. How else do you know if you’re both ready for it?

Spotify has just launched the Spotify Premium Duo — which, for people living together, gives two premium accounts for less — so we’ll use this as a case study. Here’s the situation: you and your significant other could save by getting all the Premium benefits across two different accounts for only $15.99 a month (T&Cs apply), plus you get a Duo Mix playlist that combines the genres, artists and songs you’re both listening to. But are you ready to share?

Here are some questions to ask before you go ahead and decide to make it ‘Spotify Duo Official’.

1. Are You Muso-Compatible?

Since you’re already living together it’s fair to say that you probably have a pretty good idea of what’s in your partner’s music collection. Now imagine that mingled together with your own favourite songs. How does it sound?

Keep in mind that your Duo Mix playlist can be set to chill, standard, or upbeat, so you won’t be getting an andante piano sonata shuffled in with the latest dance-hall-inspired RnB release. You might get some interesting genre mixes though. In fact, unless you have identical taste in music (boring) this playlist should be popping with a fun fusion of tracks.

You would be surprised at how well your chill EDM might merge with their laid-back jazz, or your neo-soul pop with their folksy tunes. Sometimes a little bit of a clash hits the sweet spot and boom: you have the perfect playlist for you both to enjoy separately and together.

2. Are You Ready To Share Your Love Of Comedy Rap?

No one in the world listens to just one single genre of music. We all appreciate different styles for different times and moods. That’s a given. It’s also perfectly normal to have some songs or a whole genre that you would consider your guilty pleasure.

Are you ready to take the next step? Are you ready to share your penchant for show tunes? Are you finally ready to listen to your secretly beloved comedy rap together?

You could keep them to yourself, but bringing your unexpected musical choices to the table is a pretty bold and badass move. Maybe you both have a secret addiction to ‘90s punk or old-school disco. Who knows!

3. Do They Listen To Death Metal/Screamo?

To be quite honest, if this was a problem for you, you probably wouldn’t already be living together. Let’s hope there are no surprises there.

4. Do You Want To Consolidate Your Bills?

From a purely practical perspective, one bill is better than two. You could cut down the hassle and the cost by consolidating to a Premium Duo account and adding the one Spotify bill per month to your shared costs.

5. How Long Will You Find Their Non-Stop Spinning Of That One Bluegrass Playlist Cute?

It’s great to be able to share the music that you love with each other… even when there are some genres that they might love a little too much.

Are you ready to embrace their ‘passion’ for weeks on end, even if it’s country music, hardcore rap, or emo classics? If you can find those quirks cute for the long haul, you’re ready to merge playlists.

6. Are You Ready To Admit That Their Music Taste Actually Slaps?

For some reason, being competitive about whose music is better is a pillar of most relationships. Is it a healthy relationship dynamic? Probably not. Do we do it anyway? Absolutely.

But maybe part of that comes from the fact that your libraries exist in separate worlds; you’re either listening to their music or yours. Someone is always in charge.

Be warned: merging your songs into one epic playlist might actually force you to admit that you completely dig their music too.
